Summary |
University of Strathclyde 2006-2007 - MSc Bioengineering,
From my MSc in Bioengineering I have been able to further my knowledge of engineering principles and use them to address biomedical issues.
I was given a 4 week intensive course in medical science where I learnt about physiology, anatomy and cell biology. This has given me knowledge of the major organ systems, musculoskeletal system, respiratory system, cardiovascular system and excitable tissues.
I have studied biomechanics where I have learnt to model biological environments to determine forces on joints and study the loads and deformations that can affect the properties of living tissue.
I have used VICON motion analysis systems and force plate data to analyze and diagnose gait problems.
I have knowledge of the various types of prosthetics and orthotics available and the health conditions that call for such devices.
I have studied biomaterials and am aware of the biocompatibility issues surrounding them.
My research project this year was the design of instrumentation to measure the loads applied by the hand when opening child-resistant closures.
University of Strathclyde 2002-2006 - BEng (Hons) Product Design Engineering
From my first degree I have established a thorough knowledge of what it takes to bring a new product to the market.
I am experienced in using SWOT and PEST analysis to gain a broad view of current market situations.
I am well practised in concept generation techniques such as convergence matrixes and function trees and have used ‘Design For Manufacture & Assembly’ and ‘Concurrent Engineering’ methodologies to drive a project forward successfully.
I am fully aware of the ‘Design For Environment’ principles that are becoming an increasingly important issue in modern manufacturing.
I am knowledgeable in all modern manufacturing techniques and material advancements.
I have studied Supply Chain Management techniques where I have used computer simulations to model production lines in an attempt to reduce lead times and inventory with a view to moving towards ‘Just In Time’ production.
I have studied the issues associated with intellectual property including patent control and licensing.
I have vast experience working in design teams and understand how crucial good leadership, project planning and time management is to the successful introduction of a new product.
Throughout my university career I have used 2D/3D CAD modelling software such as Solidworks and AutoCAD to develop designs and create comprehensive layout drawing packs.
I have experience in Finite Element Analysis and have used programs such as Pro Engineer and I-DEAS to simulate, validate and optimize products. |
Work Experience |
Before university I completed a week’s work experience at a product design engineering company (Mitchell Design Engineers) and then I gained experience maintaining inventory for an entire warehouse during my stay in Vancouver, Canada in the summer of 2003.
May 2008 - May 2009 Reading Town (ESL Teacher)
Teaching English as a second language to a range of students form Kindergarden to Middle School. Focusing on Phonics, Reading, Writing and Comprehension this role involved curriculum design and developing teaching materials.
Nov 2007 – April 2008 Irwin Mitchell (Customer Service Clerk)
This role involved contacting solicitors, customers and business managers to chase legal documents. During this role I was involved in training new staff how to use the system and organizing workflow to meet regular deadlines.
Oct 2005 - Jun 2006 Strathclyde Police (Information Assistant)
Dealing with both live calls from police personnel and pre-recorded messages my role was to create and update crime reports with the necessary information to process the report. This honed my typing skills to a level where I could type at the same rate as being dictated too.
Jun 2004 – Sep 2004 Abbey (Life Insurance Customer Service Agent)
My role was dealing with a wide range of incoming calls using multiple systems to solve various problems that arise in a quick, confident and efficient manner.
Oct 2003 – Feb 2004 Radisson SAS (Meetings & Events)
This involved me working in various roles throughout the hotel. These include bar work, food service and coordinating the set-up of business meetings and other functions within the hotel. During my employment at Radisson I received full bar training and was given the responsibility of running the bar at small functions.
Apr 2003 - Jun 2003 Goldfish Bank (Fraud Checker)
Part of the security department that dealt with credit card fraud. This has given me a greater insight to the importance of customer security and the Data Protection Act.
Nov 2000 – Sep 2002 Database Direct (Telephone Operator)
By working consistently as part of a team I have grown to enjoy and perform well as a team player. As I am working in what the majority of the time is an intense environment I am used to working well under pressure. During my time there I managed to acquire a Professional Development Award for Call Centre Operations.

Comments/ Hobbies/ Interests etc: |
I attended Dunoon Grammar School where in my final year I was voted house captain by my fellow students. This role has given me valuable leadership and organization experience as my responsibilities were managing school events and representing my house at student meetings. I also participated in a scheme called “Bookbusters” which involved taking on a younger pupil and helping them to improve there reading on a one to one level. I also won a special prize for excellence in technology and participated in Welcome Host training.
During the summer of 2006 I went travelling around South East Asia where I toured Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Spending time in these countries was an enlightening experience that let me see at close hand a variety of cultures, it has also given me a greater respect for the opportunities that we in the western world have and all too often take for granted. I enjoy an active social life with my friends where I love going to concerts around some of the smaller venues in Glasgow. I am a keen golfer and also enjoy cooking and playing guitar.
I am a confident clear communicator who can hold their own in a team environment, presenting to an audience or as a one to one tutor. I can build a good rapport with new people and can confidently sell a product. I currently hold a clean driving licence and have accredited qualifications in customer service.
